Follow-up varies considerably, depending on the initial grade of lymphoma and the treatment.
• Patients with low-grade lymphoma require life-long follow-up because of the strong likelihood that the disease
will recur and/or will transform into a higher-grade malignancy.
• Some forms of intermediate-grade lymphoma, particularly diffuse small cleaved cell and follicular large cell
lymphoma, may also relapse over long periods.
• Recurrence of intermediate-grade diffuse large cell and mixed lymphomas or high-grade lymphomas usually
occurs within three years after treatment. Relapse is rarely hard to find, given the rapid growth characteristics
of these lymphomas. All patients should be seen at regular intervals for physical examination, complete blood
counts and radiologic studies. Newer biologic markers of minimal disease may be used in the future.
